We’ll meet up at the ‘Flat Tyres’ spot at Petralona (200 metres next to Petralona Metro Station) and then we are going to cycle to the port of Piraeus where the ferries for Aegina depart from.
Next, we’ll be on the ferry for about 1.5 hours. Once we arrive the island we will start cycling by the sea and reach the archaeological Museum of Aegina and the beautiful Temple of Apollo.
After a while being on a flat road we’re going through Souvala, the second port of Aegina and continue towards Vagia. That’s where we’re going to leave the sea behind us and move towards the center of the island until we climb the hill which leads to the temple of Aphaia, a must-see archeological site.
Cycling down towards Agia Marina comes next and it’ll take us to a wonderful beach of sand and green waters. This is where we’re going to take a small break and relax inside a beautiful natural environment, swim and chill at the beach.
Next we’re going uphill for a bit and through the beautiful pine forest of Aegina. We’ll reach the big Monastery of Agios Nektarios and that’s where our return will start.
At the Port of Aegina our ride will be over and we will enjoy a lovely meal by the sea until it’s time to get on the ferry and leave for Piraeus.
Other things to note: Wear comfort/athletic clothes.
You must not miss to buy some homemade local products based on the famous Aegina pistachio

Aegina is the closest island to Athens, 80 minutes by ferry from Athens. It’s a great way to experience a Greek island if you are in Athens and don’t have time for an island cruise. We had a super weather day and a super time. Stavros is a super host, very friendly, a great conversationalist, accommodating our needs and he adapted the schedule for us. The bikes were in good condition and shifted easily. We met at Stavros’ shop just before 8 am and we’re underway on the 8 km ride to the ferry by 8:10. It was a lovely ride to the ferry, mostly on dedicated bike lane and lined with lots of lush plants. There are a couple kms at the end in traffic, but Stavros was very good at giving us direction and to follow him fir navigating the traffic without problem. We were well fed, with a coffee and savoury pies for the ferry ride, a stop for us to lunch on snacks from a mini mart and a post-ride gyro with beer at a port side restaurant before taking the ferry home. Stavros made sure we had all the water we needed and provided a disposable bottle that he refilled. The climb to The Temple of Aphaeus was worth it. It’s not steep for long distances and there is only one switchback. The temple is a prototype of the Parthenon. It’s smaller, but there were more of the interior walls still in place. And there is a great view back to the sea. The trip from there to Agia Marina was all downhill and we had time to relax and eat our choice of snacks and fruit at the beach that we purchased from a mini mart. The water was warm for wading or swimming. The road from there was undulating, so again, no long climbs and the that was followed by a long downhill back to the port where we enjoyed a gyro and beer at a port side patio before going back. I learned that Aegina is known for its pistachio production and Stavros took us to a kiosk in the port before we left where we could buy all kinds of pistachio products I’d never seen before – spreads, rolls, pestos, bars and of course roasted pistachios. Overall, a great day trip away from the city.
