Manolis’ tour was much more than culinary. It was a walking tour explaining the history of his charming city of Agios Nicholoas when he grew up and seemingly knew everyone. On each block he detailed the restaurants – which to go to, which are local favorites, which have been run by generations of families. I had only wished I had taken his tour my first night so I could take advantage of his many insights. He explained the Venetian rule and how it influenced the area and the reason the area became known as Mirabella thus the Mirabella Bay. My favorite part of the was going into a 12th century ancient church that he was able to borrow a key to get in. The only word of caution is the walk can be long and may not be suitable for everyone but I’m sure he could tailor to your needs. When the tour was over and I understood which restaurants to hit in the future, we went to one of his favorite spots off the lake where he ordered Greek specialties and explained the local cheeses and traditional foods. He shared with me his website and pdf where he has mapped out tours of the area and insights… much better than the books I’ve been relying on so far. It was a delightful evening with a charming host.
